OPEN Mic  |  Music  |  Meet the Artists & Demonstrations

 

The public is invited to discover Downtown Greensboro and its creative community on First Friday, August 6.  The evening will feature fused glass-making workshops, new and original art exhibits and several live music venues along this art exploration.  All activities are free from 6-9pm unless otherwise noted.

 

First Friday is a self-guided tour of Downtown Greensboro’s shops, galleries and alternative venues that participate with specially programmed arts events and extended hours (until 9pm) on the first Friday of every month. 

 

First Friday is an opportunity to discover the center city’s local artistic community and encourages commerce, support of locally-owned, independent businesses located in Downtown.  The event is promoted through a partnership between Downtown Greensboro Inc. and the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro.

Ambleside Gallery – 528 S. Elm St.

Group exhibition through the month of August with additional, new watercolor, oil and pastel works by Greensboro artists Alexis Lavine, James Celano and Leigh Rodenbough.

 

Center City Park – 200 N. Elm St. (corner of Elm St. & Friendly Ave.)

Enjoy live music from Come Hell or High Water, 6p.m., Citified, 7p.m. and Filthybird at 8p.m. Interact with Mischief Makers Handmade Market and fun activities for children.  Free and open to the public.

 

Elements Gallery - 602 S. Elm Street

Featuring glass artists: Susan O'Leary, Karen Lewit and Raylene Fealy.  Come by to see beautiful glass pieces created by these talented artists.  Both fused glass and stained glass sparkles throughout the gallery.  A mini drop-in workshop on making fused glass pendants for anyone that comes by.   ($10 all supplies included). 

 

Elm Street Center - 203 S. Elm St. (home to the Empire Room)

Browse artist’s displays from 5:30-9p.m., sit and listen to the sounds of Neill Clegg from 6- 9p.m. and enjoy a drink from the cash bar.  Lobby open at 5:30 p.m.  Featured artists include: Victoria Clegg, fiber; Lynn Donovan, photography; Lawrence Feir, metal work; Emily Graham, fiber; Jay Jones, mobiles; Ann Lynch, pottery; Jillian Webb Martin, painting; Susan O'Leary, fused glass; Leanne Pizio, pottery; James Quinn, metal work; and Alison Walls, jewelry.

 

Greensboro Cultural Center – 200 N. Davie St.

 

·         African American Atelier

      Featuring The Wrap-Up: Get off of Facebook, Pick up a Paintbrush. An interactive artist meet-and-greet for the 25under25  art exhibition.  The Wrap-Up will include music with a “turntablist” and a participatory community art project from 6:30-8:30p.m.  25under25 participating artists include: Aaron Evans; Aasysia Townsell; Abra Boiling; Ashley Burnett; Bexton Carmichael; Brittain Peck; Brittney Drakeford; Conchetta Davis; Elisa Fox; Jaleesa Bartley; Jennifer Moore; Jeremy Brown; Jordan Powell; Karen Barnes; Lucas, Kayla Lewis; Katie Ford; Keyshia Tamar Haithcock; Krystal Fullwood; LeShari Clemmons; Luis Cesar Frias Leal; Quandrick Hagans; Raashita Connelly; Takisha Wise; and Tomi Balgoun.

 

·         Center for Visual Artists

Opening reception for 5th annual summer art camp student exhibition and celebration, Dirty Fingernails.  An art-filled interactive celebration and fundraiser.  Explore sale on children’s art work, a silent art auction and all donations received during celebration will support the CVA Scholarship Program for young artists.

 

·         Green Hill Center for NC Art

      View NCAC Fellowship exhibition, peruse the local art in The Shop @ Green Hill Center while listening to the sounds of local musicians from 6-8p.m.

 

Indie Market - Located at the corner of S. Elm and MLK (4-9p.m.)

The Indie Market is a place where local artists and crafts people come together for an Open Air Market of handmade and vintage items, with a little music thrown in for shopping pleasure. 

 

Vendors this month include: Bagel's Buttons; Horse 'O Peace Ranch; Carver Crafts & Jewelry; LuLu Lather's Vintage Felted Soap; and Rainbow Tea.

 

The International Civil Rights Center & Museum - 134 S. Elm Street

The Museum will celebrate First Friday with Cufflinx Band featuring Dema. Whether it’s jazz, reggae, rhythm and blues or gospel, this multi-layered band brings a wealth of experience, talent and style to the evening. The Museum will also offer extended tour hours of its permanent exhibition, The Battlegrounds. Free admission into lobby area.

 

Lyndon Street Artworks – 205 Lyndon St.

Enjoy refreshments, wander through the building, and talk with artists in their studios. Meet artists demonstrating their techniques. Purchase or commission something of your very own and support the arts and artists in your own community today.

 

Lyndon Street Artworks features over forty local artists' working studios.

 

Mack and Mack – 220 S. Elm St.

Drop in to Mack and Mack's showroom to hear the inscrutable musical meanderings of The F-Art Ensemble. These classically trained musicians use the superb acoustics at Mack and Mack to explore open improvisation. No one, including the musicians, knows what will happen until the notes are played. Refreshments.

 

Old Photo Specialists – 320-B S. Elm St.

Showcasing the work of local artist Vance Garvin.  Vance captures the essence of portraiture through his work in pencil, oil, pastel and watercolor.

 

Sew Bu2ful Designs & The Honey Bun Boutique – 219 Summit Ave.

Featuring Eye Art by Araneetae makeup application and cake sampling by Sebastian’s Dessertery Cake Boss. Wine and chocolate served.

Studio B – 520 S. Elm St.

Browse Artista Orlando Silva's Beautiful Forms summer sale exhibit, with all art work 50% off. Live music and refreshments.

 

Winter Light Gallery & Art Studios - 410 Blandwood Ave. (on the corner of Spring Garden St. and Blandwood Ave.)

 

Jerry Cartwright Found Objects exhibit.  Jerry Cartwright is a master of multimedia using photography, found objects and objects created to present an array of wonderful and unique art!

 

Winter Light artists include:  Jerry Cartwright; Chase Ferguson; Vicki Johnson; Kathy Brusnighan; Judy Meyler; Carol Meetze-Moates; Kathy Phillips; Steve Robinson; Carol Sams; Allie Scott; Phyllis Sharpe; Jane Smith and Jeanne Twilley.

 

Yew Tree Gallery – 604 S. Elm St.

Featured artist is Durham painter Barbara Rohde. Works in watercolors and acrylics, often building vibrant layers of transparent colors to create abstract and realistic pictures. Professionally trained as an art educator, she currently teaches watercolor painting in Durham.
